Day351: Milan “The Vertical Forest”

In Milan, where towers by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, and Daniel Libeskind stand side by side, I had become somewhat desensitized to standard high-rises. However, passing near Garibaldi Station, the “Bosco Verticale” immediately caught my attention.

While planting trees on balconies is common, this is on another level. Rather than typical potted plants, the building is covered in mature trees, creating an overwhelming volume of greenery.

I realized that for a structure to truly be felt as a “forest,” the physical scale of the trees is essential. The largest trees span three stories—roughly 10 meters in height. To support such vegetation, the design must overcome immense challenges: soil depth, structural load, and resistance to high-altitude winds. I was struck by the sheer volume and engineering required to make this vision a reality.

ミラノはミラノサローネというデザインの祭典が行われるだけあって、新しいデザインがたくさん見られた。ザハ・ハディド、磯崎新、ダニエル・リベスキンドの３人のスター建築家によるスカイスクレーパーの競演もあるくらいで、その副作用か通常の高層ビルには自分のアンテナが反応しなくなっていたが、そんな自分のアンテナが反応したのが、ガリバルディ駅付近で目に飛び込んできた緑のビルだった。ボスコ・ヴェルティカーレ（垂直の森）と建築家自身は呼んでおり、先日紹介したユニテ・ダビタシオンは垂直の都市だったが、その森バージョンだ。ユニテ・ダビタシオンは人間のためだけだったが、自然を取り込むことでコンセプトを生態系全体に拡大している。（ただし、建物の中に街の機能はない。）飛び出したバルコニーにはこれでもかと言うほどの木が植えてあり、大きい木は3層分、約10メートルほどあった。

これに併せてだと思うが、隣のピンクのビルもかなり植栽を充実させていた。ただ比べてみると、それでも森というイメージまでは少し遠い。「緑のあるマンション」ではなく「森」に見えるためには、木の量だけでなく、ある程度の木の大きさが不可欠なのだと思った。よく、鉢物とか地植えとかと言い、マンションだから地植えができないという発想しかなかったのだが、ここではもはや地植えである。プランターと地植えの枠にこだわる必要はなかったのだ。
