Day350: Roma “The Crab in the Gap”

In the historic cities of Italy, where ancient buildings leave little room for modern planning, the streets are a mosaic of parallel-parked cars. Amidst this tight squeeze, I often spotted tiny cars parked in a completely different direction from the rest. These cars ignore the rules of parallel parking, tucking themselves head-first into gaps that any normal vehicle would pass by. While there were plenty of modern, rounded electric vehicles, I felt the vintage cars were a better fit for Rome’s ancient streets. The classic Fiat 500, with its charming curves and distinctive round side mirrors, is particularly captivating. When a design is this good, even the “rudeness” of ignoring parking etiquette to squeeze into a tiny gap becomes endearing—it transforms into a piece of art that colors the city. Technically, these cars are longer than a standard car’s width and must be protruding, yet I saw no parking tickets. This resilience—the “if there’s a gap, park there” mentality—seems to be an unwritten rule of the city. Still, with less than 10cm of clearance and parallel parking into spaces barely half a car-length wide, the driving skills of Romans are nothing short of extraordinary. I feel it won’t be long before we see cars that move sideways like crabs.

イタリアの古都では、歴史的な建築がひしめき合っているせいで駐車場が慢性的に不足しており、街のいたるところが路上駐車の列で埋め尽くされている。基本は縦列駐車だが、その列の中に、時折「違う向き」で刺さっている超小型車を見かける。丸っこい形の電気自動車もたくさんあったのだが、私は昔の車の方がローマの古い街に合っていて好みだ。旧型のフィアット500は丸みを帯びた愛嬌のあるフォルムに、ちょこんと飛び出した円いサイドミラーがとても良い。デザインが良いと、縦列駐車の作法を無視して、わずかな隙間に突っ込んでいる無作法さえ愛らしく、都市を彩る作品のように見えてくる。厳密にいえば他の車の車幅よりは長いし、はみ出しているはずなのだが、駐車違反の札が貼られている様子もない。この「隙間さえあれば」という逞しさは、この街のルールなのだろう。それにしても、前後10cm足らずの幅寄せや、車体の長さに満たないほどしか余裕のないスペースへの縦列駐車。ローマの人々の運転技術は、もはや異能の域に達している。いつか、真横にスライドして駐車できるカニのような車が登場する日も、そう遠くはないかもしれない。
