Day348: Rome “Brilliance Within Restrictions”
Rome is a city where ancient structures are preserved with such rigor that historical monuments meet you at every turn. In a place like this, building anything new is a rare feat—partly because any excavation inevitably hits an archaeological site, and any new design must navigate a labyrinth of strict regulations. Amidst this dense historical fabric, the one modern exception I encountered was Zaha Hadid’s museum (MAXXI), situated slightly away from the city center. Compared to other Zaha works I’ve seen, the exterior feels more subdued. Yet, this is a conscious design choice born of respect for its context, not a compromise. It is fundamentally different from the way her winning proposal for the Tokyo Olympic Stadium was diluted by various external pressures—an example of a design suffering from “incomplete combustion” due to constraints. Here, even within Rome’s strict limitations, Zaha’s vision was fully realized; it achieved a total, “complete combustion.” As you move through the building, the paths merge, diverge, and stand independent. Her signature concept of intersecting lines is masterfully translated into a rich, physical experience. In a city where history feels static, Zaha’s architecture—where the flow of the path itself becomes the structure—acts as a dynamic junction where the past and future vividly collide.
ローマは古くからの建物が驚くほど保存されていて、どこを歩いても必ず歴史的な建造物に行き当たる。新築が難しいこの街では、地面を掘れば遺跡に当たり、建てれば厳格な規制に縛られるという特有の事情があるようだ。そんな歴史が凝縮された街並みの中で、唯一出会った現代建築が、中心地から少し離れた場所にあるザハ・ハディドのミュージアム（MAXXI）だった。これまで目にしてきた彼女の建築に比べると、外観はどこか抑制が効いていておとなしい印象を受ける。しかし、それは周囲の文脈への高度な配慮が生んだデザインであり、決して妥協の産物ではない。かつての東京オリンピックスタジアム案が、様々な事情に揉まれて修正を余儀なくされ、結果としてデザインが不完全燃焼に終わった例とは、根本的に性質が異なるのだ。ここは、ローマという厳しい規制の中で、ザハのコンセプトが見事に完全燃焼していた。通路を歩き進めるにつれ、そのラインがくっついたり離れたり、時には独立して宙を舞ったりする。重なり合う「線」というコンセプトが、実際の空間体験として極めて豊かに構築されている。歴史が静止したかのようなローマにおいて、流動的な通路そのものが建築となるザハの作品は、過去と未来が鮮やかに交差する場所として機能していた。
