Day344: Marseille “The Modulor View”
I visited Le Corbusier’s masterpiece, the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. By simply signing in at the reception, visitors are granted free access to parts of the third and fourth floors, as well as the rooftop. While the access is limited to the areas north of the elevator on each floor, it is more than enough to experience the architectural highlights.
The complex functions as a “vertical city,” housing a restaurant, café, post office, and various private offices. Walking through the corridors, I noticed real estate listings for residential units priced around 500,000 euros. It was a striking reminder that this historic landmark isn’t just a preserved relic; it remains a living, breathing piece of real estate.
The rooftop was particularly impressive. It is enclosed by high concrete walls, meaning that shorter individuals often need to step up onto a ledge just to see the view.
However, I made a fascinating discovery. Le Corbusier based his architectural proportions on the “Modulor,” which uses a standard height of 183cm. Standing at nearly that exact height myself, my eye level aligned perfectly with the top of the wall. From my vantage point, the edge of the concrete perfectly framed the Mediterranean, from where the sea begins all the way to the horizon. Whether this was a deliberate calculation or a happy coincidence, I cannot say. Yet, the moment the landscape snapped into place through my own physical scale, the massive concrete structure felt suddenly, intimately close.
Interestingly, it is possible to stay overnight at the Unité d’Habitation for a relatively reasonable price, starting at just over 100 euros. After enjoying a coffee at the “Restaurant Le Corbusier,” it occurred to me that for anyone visiting, spending a night as a temporary inhabitant of this monumental structure would surely be an unforgettable experience.

ここでは受付で記帳するだけで、3階、4階、そして屋上の一部を無料で見学することができる。見学範囲は各階ともエレベーターより北側のエリアに限られているが、この建築のハイライトを体感するには十分な内容だ。
内部にはレストランやカフェ、郵便局、そして様々なオフィスが入居しており、今も人々の生活や仕事が息づく「垂直の都市」として機能している。ふと、廊下に並ぶオフィスの壁に目をやると、住居ユニットが50万ユーロ前後で売り出されている広告が貼られていた。歴史的な名建築が、単なる保存対象ではなく、今も現役の不動産として価値を持ち続けている生々しさに驚かされる。
圧巻だったのは屋上だ。周囲は比較的高めの壁で囲われており、大人であっても小柄な人なら、台に登らなければ外の景色を眺めることができない設計になっている。
しかし、ここで面白い発見があった。コルビジェが設計の基準とした身体尺度「モジュロール」の基準身長は日本人にはかなり大きい183cm。奇しくもそれとほぼ同じ身長を持つ私のアイレベル（目線の高さ）から見ると、壁の境界線がちょうどマルセイユの海が始まるところから水平線までを、完璧な構図で切り取っていたのだ。これが計算し尽くされた設計によるものか、あるいは単なる偶然かは分からない。けれど、自分の身体を通してその視界がピタリと収まった瞬間、このコンクリートの街との距離が、少しだけ縮まったような気がした。
なお、このユニテ・ダビタシオンは1泊100ユーロ強からと比較的リーズナブルに宿泊することも可能なので、見学だけでなく、一夜を過ごしてみるのも面白いかもしれない。
