Day308: Utrecht “Primary”
Thirty minutes by train from Amsterdam, I visited Utrecht, known as the hometown of graphic designer Dick Bruna. Brick buildings line the streets, canals run through the city, and the atmosphere feels calm and restrained. Within this quiet townscape, the Rietveld Schröder House suddenly appears. So unconventional that, at the time, Rietveld’s daughter disliked being teased at school for living in such a strange house. Composed of straight lines and primary colors, the house resembles a Mondrian abstraction. Rather than focusing on materials, it shows an uncompromising commitment to color and composition. It makes no attempt to blend into its surroundings, yet its ideas are strikingly clear.
アムステルダムから電車で30分。グラフィックデザイナー、ディック・ブルーナの故郷として知られるユトレヒトを訪れた。レンガ造りの建物が並び、街の中を水路が流れる、落ち着いた雰囲気の街だ。そんな街並みの中に、突然現れるのがシュレーダー邸。あまりにも奇抜で、当時、住んでいた娘は「変な家に住んでいる」と学校でからかわれるのが嫌だったという。直線と色で構成されたその姿はまさに、同じ時代に活動し、デ・スティルという運動を主導した芸術家のモンドリアンの抽象画そのものだ。素材そのものへのこだわりというより、徹底した色と構成への執着は、街に溶け込む気をまったく感じさせず、まさに実験住宅だなと思った。
