Day309: Antwerp “Crystal and Concrete”
A mass of glass sits atop the former Port Authority building. Antwerp is a city known for diamonds, and in that context, the glass seems to be treated like crystal rather than a mere façade material. This glass volume is supported from below by a heavy concrete mass, characteristic of Zaha Hadid’s architecture. Reflecting the surrounding sky and city, the building changes its expression depending on the time of day.
旧港湾局の建物の上に、ガラスの塊が乗っかっている。アントワープはダイヤモンドで有名な街であり、その文脈を踏まえて、ガラスはクリスタルのような素材として使われているのだろう。そのガラスのボリュームを、ザハ建築特有のコンクリートの塊が下から支えている。ガラスは周囲の空や街を映し込み、時間帯によって表情を変えていく。
