Day315: Porto “Narrow and Vast”

The massive polyhedral volume is overwhelming, yet the spatial experience inside is remarkably rich. Normally, people feel a sense of openness when they leave a building and step out into the world. Here, however, the vast space created by the concrete shell structure produces that same feeling when moving from a deliberately compressed area into the main foyer. Moving back and forth between narrowness and openness is itself one element of a diverse spatial experience.

In architecture, there is often discussion about how to create an intermediate zone between inside and outside. I felt that spaciousness itself might also be an element that can blur the boundary between interior and exterior.
