Day353: Shanghai “A Little Liquid Luxury”

During my travels, hotels usually provide a kettle, and a quick ask at the front desk will get you hot water. Because of this, individual instant coffee sticks have always been a travel essential. However, there are moments when I just crave a cold iced coffee. That’s when I find myself wishing for a liquid concentrate rather than a powder. I hadn’t come across this in other countries, and the packaging is quite well-designed. It’s a small, simple luxury that makes a coffee break feel just right. With this update, I will be pausing tocotoco for a while and transitioning to cotocoto. Due to the changing situation in the Middle East, I had to adjust my route and itinerary mid-journey, but I hope to visit that region again when the time is right. Starting with this post, I’ve included Japanese text to make these stories more accessible to everyone. I hope you enjoy the next chapter of my journey.

旅行中、ホテルにはケトルが部屋にあることも多いし、なくてもフロントに頼めばだいたいお湯は手に入るから、一杯ずつ小分けされたスティックコーヒーは良い旅のお供だ。ただ、ふとアイスコーヒーが飲みたくなったとき、粉末を溶かすためだけの少しのお湯を用意するのが少しだけ面倒になるので、暑いところでは特に原液タイプがあってもいいなと思っていた。これまで他の国ではあまり見かけなかったが、上海で見つけたこれはパッケージのデザインも潔くていい。アイスコーヒーが一目で分かる色とビジュアルデザインで、手のひらに納まるサイズ感からは明らかにそのまま飲めないためにそれを作るためのものであることがすぐに理解できる。グラスに注ぐだけで、旅の合間に「ちゃんとした」一杯が完成する。

なお、今回の更新をもってtocotocoは一時停止し、次からはまた日本でのローカルな日常での業をアーカイブするcotocotoへと移る。道中、中東情勢の変化により旅程の変更を余儀なくされたが、また折を見て訪れたい。今回から、より多くの方に親しんでいただけるよう日本語の併記も始めたのでまたの旅を、楽しみにしていただければと思う。
