Day342: Barcelona “Mosaic of Light”

This iconic Barcelona office building tapers gently toward its peak. Its façade consists of square units—both openings and finishes—randomly colored and encased behind an outer layer of glass louvers. While it appeared radical in photographs, standing before it, I was struck by how naturally it integrated into the surrounding landscape. If it were glass alone, it would appear as a cold, monolithic mass; if it were color alone, it would be nothing more than an eccentric object. Instead, the walls softly filter through at times, while at others, they flicker behind the louvers, creating an abstract, mosaic-like texture.

バルセロナのランドマークであるそのオフィスビルは、上層に行くに従ってなだらかにすぼまっていく形態で、開口部と外装仕上げがランダムに着彩された正方形ユニットで構成され、そのさらに外側をガラスルーバーが覆っていた。写真で見たときは、とんでもないものが現れたなと思っていたが、実際に足を運んでみると、むしろ周囲の風景に馴染んでいる印象を受けた。ガラスだけなら冷たく巨大な塊に見え、色だけなら奇抜なオブジェで終わってしまうところだが、ある時は壁面が柔らかく透け、ある時はルーバーの隙間から見え隠れすることで、モザイクのような抽象的な質感が生まれていた。
