Day339: Casablanca “The Identity of Déjà Vu”

Despite being my first time in Casablanca, there was a landscape that made me feel, strangely enough, “this is exactly how it should be.” The palm trees, white buildings, and the heavy air near the sea where bikes and cars mingle in chaos. Through fragments seen in magazines and advertisements, an image of Casablanca must have formed within me without my even realizing it.

The urban planning experiments of “white modernism and tree-lined avenues” conducted here in the early 20th century later became a model for resorts and port cities worldwide. The roots of the “modern landscapes” I have seen elsewhere are right here. This sense of déjà vu, a conviction felt toward a place never seen before, might be proof that I have long been a recipient of the powerful identity this city has projected and spread across the globe over time.

カサブランカを訪れるのは初めてなのに、不思議と「カサブランカらしい」と思った風景があった。椰子の木、白いビル、そして雑多なバイクや車が混ざり合う海の近くの空気。雑誌や広告で目にしていた断片によって、いつの間にか自分の中にカサブランカのイメージが出来上がっていたのだろう。

20世紀初頭、この街で行われた「白い近代建築と並木道」という都市計画の実験は、後に世界中のリゾート地や港湾都市のモデルとなった。自分が他の街で見てきた「モダンな景観」のルーツがここにある。初めて見るはずの景色に対して抱くこの既視感は、この街が長い時間をかけて発信し、世界に浸透していったアイデンティティを、自分が長年受け取り続けてきた証なのかもしれない。
