Day305: London “Behind My Focus”
I came here to see 30 St Mary Axe, the Norman Foster skyscraper quietly appearing beyond the Thames. That was my focus. But when I turned around, the Lloyd’s Building by Richard Rogers stood there with overwhelming presence. Its exposed services and mechanical expression recalled the Pompidou Center–inside turned out, unapologetically visible. Function becoming form.
Often, only what lies directly in front of us comes into view. Still, it feels important to pause, look around, and try to see things from more than one angle.
本当はテムズ川のロンドン橋付近からスカイスクレーパーの中で異彩を放っていたノーマンフォスター設計の30 st Mary Axeというスカイスクレーパーを見に行ったのだが、後ろを振り返るとそこに圧倒的なインパクトで設備むき出しのビルがあった。その名もロイズビルという。設備をこんなにも前に出している建築としてすぐにパリのポンピドーセンターを連想したが、それもそのはず、ポンピドーセンターをレンゾピアノと共同設計したリチャードロジャースの設計だった。
ロイズビルとの出会いのインパクトは全く予期しないことだった。人間はそれしか目に見えていないことも多いが、たまには辺りを見渡してみて多角的に物事を見られる人でいたいものだと思った。
